What are the reference standards for lifelines?

The rules for safety when working at height are dictated by Legislative Decree 81/2008, otherwise known as the Consolidated Law, which indicates:

  • The figures involved in the assessment, control and application of procedures suitable for protecting workplace safety;
  • The obligation to train and inform workers;
  • Assessing the risks inherent in working at heights—for years the leading cause of workplace deaths—and adopting adequate protection systems.

The Consolidated Law, Articles 15, 17, 22, 90, 91, 110, and 115, emphasize the importance of analyzing the risk of falls from a height and following the provisions of the Technical Standards. The most important of these are:

UNI EN 795:2012 - Anchoring devices
CEN/TS 16415:2013 - Use of the anchoring system by several people at the same time
UNI 11578:2015 - Anchoring devices intended for permanent installation - Requirements and test methods.

Finally, regional regulations must be taken into close consideration when designing the system.
