What are the main confined spaces?

It's not possible to provide a comprehensive list of confined spaces. The main work environments to consider are:

  • tanks and containers
  • holds of ships/aircraft
  • silos and storage tanks
  • vats for the production of wine, beer, and spirits
  • sewers, pipes, manholes
  • mixing drums
  • septic tanks
  • reactors (reaction vessels)
  • combustion chambers in furnaces, boilers, etc.

Spaces that at first glance might not be considered confined but which are nevertheless considered as such due to influences from the surrounding environment or the ways in which work is carried out are:

  • elevator shafts
  • cold storage rooms
  • cellars/attics
  • gallerie
  • deep excavations with a narrow section
  • tubs
  • invaded
  • purifiers
  • rooms / places with upper access (even outdoors such as a stadium)
  • depressions in the ground where the accumulation of gases heavier than air is possible
  • rooms or places that are not or poorly ventilated
  • narrow and difficult-to-access rooms and technical spaces.
